It’s time to kick-start this blog so here’s a photo I took a few weeks ago on our way down to Gougane Barra. There’s a little picnic area which we seem to stop at each time we go down that way. I can’t remember exactly where it is but it’s near enough to Béal Atha an Ghaorthaidh, or Ballingeary which you may know it as but it never sounds as nice as the Irish name.

Bord Gais Energy recently starting selling electricity to the Irish market, adding to the incumbent ESB and another recent entrant, Airtricity. This shows the Bord Gais HQ in Cork with part of the slick marketing campaign attached to the buiding. They even have a Twitter account as part of the online presence.

Balloon man on Patrick Street while we were having a coffee in the Pod (I think it’s called).

Uilleann piper Ian busking on the streets of Cork a week or so ago. “Why not get paid to practice” is his attitude. So true!
In another online life, I play the pipes myself with the Cork Pipers Club.

A small boat coming into Crosshaven a few weeks ago while we were out for a Sunday walk.

Happy new year to you and yours. It’s been a year since I started posting on Pana-Vision and while I had a daily photo for quite some time I didn’t keep things going during the summer. There’s more to life than blogging after all! I hope to keep posting on a regular basis here but 2009 will be a busy year for me as I’m getting married this year. Not long to go and too much on the to-do list still!
The photo above is of the occultation of Venus on December 1. I’m not too pleased with how it came out but I had to shorten the exposure length as anything longer than about 10 seconds was causing a streaming effect where the motion of the moon could be clearly seen. Anybody got tips for this type of photography?

Taken on a bright Sunday evening while walking in town back in November.

A woman checks out cinema listings at the North Gate Cinema. There are a few Gate cinemas around Cork now and this one was closed for ages when a fire in the adjoining apartment complex caused serious smoke damage in the cinema. Good to see it open again, it’s not as smelly as the much vaunted Mahon Point cinema!

It’s been a while since I posted. Since the last post, I’ve got a new laptop, so to celebrate I tried a new photo editing technique which I’ve seen in quite a few places. I tried the tips used on The Almond Croissant Diaries. Unfortunately it didn’t quite translate to Gimp for me so I used this tutorial on Gimp.org. The photo in question is actually the one and only apple from the apple tree in my back garden. You may see hints of grey in the coloured areas, which apparently is similiar to my full head of non-grey hair!
