I had dreamed of bringing this car home to Ireland from Australia but unfortunately the 'Common Sense' fairy came knocking and I decided it was best to move it on. Almost 400 horse power of pure Australian Muscle car (4ltr straight six turbo with over 550nm of torque @ 1900 rpm and 275kw of power). It was sold today and I'm gutted.

My son Diarmuid in action for Redcliffe Dolphins. He had a stormer of a game (only his 2nd time playing league) scoring 2 tries.
Shot this game of Rugby League last Friday night under the worst lights I've ever witnessed. There were actual black spots on the field - players were literally disappearing and reappearing all over the place. Anyhow - the net effect of this was that I had to shoot at ISO12800 with my D3 (and the 300mm at f/2.8) and ISO6400 with my D700 (with the 70-200mm at f2/8 attached) in order to reach anything like a reasonable shutter speed (close to the length of the lens would be my min). I didn't know what to expect and I seriously considered putting the gear away. Well I'm glad I didn't. I knew the images were going to be really noisy and soft with many completely out of focus but on taking the files into Lightroom I was pleasantly suprised with some of the images I managed to capture (don't get me wrong - I dumped 80% of the originals). I didn't bother too much with trying to reduce the noise because I didn't want to sacrifice the little bit of detail I had left.
All in all I'm pretty happy with the resulting images. I feel that the conversion has given them a gritty dramatic quality. They're not pretty - but I feel that they contain something that I haven't seen before in my own sport work and I'm going to have to think about that a little. More shots from the game can be found here - please let me know what you think!

I haven't really gotten to do much sports photography on this trip - the football season has only really started and we've been having too much fun touring around. A couple of weeks ago though I did manage to cover a few games that where played in the Redcliffe, QLD area.
This was my first time to cover rugby league and it took a while to get in to the flow of the game. It was an enjoyable experience. To be honest though I still prefer to photograph union :)
Regarding the above photo - the Redcliffe player has broken through to score a fine try - it's the effort on the face of the boy who's tackling that makes the photo for me (never mind the poor chap who got buried underneath him) :)

I'm not entirely sure if this is supposed to be an exhibit or not. I found it outside the Christchurch Art Gallery. If it's not an exhibit it probably should be. If it is - why?
