I had a great time at the Drogheda Photowalk last weekend. I tend to do more chatting than picture taking, which is fine by me. It’s nice to catch up with photo walkers I‘ve met before and meet new ones too. These three gentlemen were just some of the faces we came across during the day.
Thanks to Shane for organizing a great day out in Drogheda.

These pictures are from a recent photo shoot with Georgina, her son Noah and their gorgeous dog Dotted. The photographs were taken in the comfort of Georgina’s house using only natural light.

A very photogenic family, I must say. We had lots of fun.

This is one picture from a small collection I’ve put together in my portfolio of birds of prey – the superb American Eagle. The photographs were taken at various places in Ireland, sometimes with the help of handlers who were good enough to hold black material or paper behind the birds for me. You can see more of my birds of prey pictures here.

We were lucky enough to get tickets to hear and see the Dalai Lama speak in St. Brigid’s Church in Kildare town last month. The Dalai Lama arrived in Kildare for a short ceremony and then walked up to the Cathedral, before arriving in the church. Needless to say it was an honour to be there.

Below are a few members of Ireland’s tiny Tibetan community. I could be completely wrong but I think I read a statistic saying there were only 19 Tibetan’s living here.

And finally, this little dog looks a little bemused about the fuss as people left the square in Kildare. (Had to get a dog photography in here somewhere : )

Here’s Tassie, who’s about 9 years old, a fabulous gentle soul. This dog seemed very happy to have her portrait taken and was enjoying the sun in Kilkenny just as much as the rest of us.

This weekend, myself and Jason attended a teaching in Kilkenny by Panchen Ötrul Rinpoche, founder of the Jampa Ling Buddhist Centre (Cavan). Jampa Ling means “place of infinite loving-kindness” and the teachings this weekend were about meditation, loving kindness and compassion. Rinpoche laughs a lot while he’s talking and the whole room literally lights up when he smiles.

Ana La is a Buddhist nun, also from Jampa Ling. Ana La led the meditation practices and explained a huge amount about overcoming suffering and finding happiness. It was an absolute honor to be in the same room as these people for the weekend.
The teachings were held at Ballilogue Clochan in Kilkenny, which is a beautifully converted farmhouse and worth a visit for the peace, solitude and fantastic home cooking. You can even attend photography workshops with Mark McCall. Thanks to all for a great weekend.

Went for a lovely walk on the pier in Dún Laoghaire on Sunday and met this bearded gent who was kind enough to let me snap a portrait. The weather was fantastic with a hazy blue sky. I used an orange filter on the picture below, hence the almost black sky behind the lighthouse at the end of the pier.

Jason had a newly shorn head to go with his Prussian aristocrat ‘tache which gave him a circus strong man look, while Maria looked glamorous in her Madonna D & G shades and leather gloves, as modelled below.

Getting a dog to pose for its portrait is not as straightforward as you might think : ) Here my little canine model was doing everything possible to not look at the camera. It was obviously much better fun rolling around on a human lap. In fact I think he have even been laughing at my attempts to get his attention.

Finally after much cajoling … who’s a good boy?

I took this in a very dark church in a small town in the Tuscany hills. I loved how the face was lit up and the shadow that was cast behind. It’s a hand-held shot and I have to admit that I took several (loads) of this statue in a bid to get what I wanted, but I’m happy enough with this. Baby Jesus’s face is in a bit of a white-out but overall I like this picture and it brings back nice memories of a trip to Tuscany last year.

This was a shoot from the hip/upper chest area while trying to look nonchalant in the pub moment. I liked how the man reading the paper was reflected in the small mirror behind the bar. I’m thinking I probably should have cropped out the face in the far right, but it’s posted now.
