After three weeks of mist, drizzle and rain, the sun finally visited Galway. I watched sunrise down at the diving board on Salthill Promenade [short Youtube timelapse of the sunrise here ]- the strong wind was not loud enough to drown out the shrieks of the early morning swimmers getting into the freezing water. I watched the sun set at the Cliffs of Moher in the face of an almighty gale. In between the buffeting and the gales, I climbed Abbey Hill in the Burren and watched rainbows chase rainclouds across Galway Bay.
Happy New Year to you all.

At least they made the effort.
We all know about the Wren Boys and their tradition of dressing is straw costumes and parading the streets. We never really had them in Trim but most years would see a few of the local traveller kids call round the doors on St. Stephens’s Day putting on some sort of act and collecting a few quid. Even they seem to have stopped calling so I was quite surprised to answer the door to these two “wrenboys” who offered to play me a tune which they duly did.
I don’t even know if they understood the story behind the Wren or Wran, depending on where you are, but fair play to them for trying. They didn’t do too bad a job on the music either.
As an aside to this, I still have three more shots to get to complete my 52 Project. I was about to give up because I’ve been too busy to get out with the camera. The “real” shooting season is upon us and spare time is in short supply.
However, I have just been reminded by my good lady wife that my first shot in the series wasn’t taken and posted until the beginning of the second week in January and that I still have a week to go. All is not lost…….
