How's that Sir?
I drive through Ballyfermot in Dublin on a regular basis and I often see the mobile barber shop parked along Sarsfield Road. It seems to be a busy little shop as every time I pass, there’s someone sitting in the chair and usually someone else waiting for a haircut. I’ve never seen a mobile barber before so nothing for it only pull up and take a few shots.
The trailer is an Ifor Williams box van trailer which I thought was a converted horse box and it is quite small inside. Obviously I couldn’t take pictures without the people knowing so in I went and asked if they’d mind. No problem, says the barber as he enquired what paper I was from. None, I told him, they were just for my own personal collection but I’d organise a couple of prints for him. He was pleased with that.
Anyway, barbers are a bit like taxi drivers. They know everything and have an opinion on everything, so while I snapped away, we discussed important world affairs like Westlife, mobile phones, newspapers, cameras, his cousin and God knows what!
As an aside, the inspiration for taking a shot like this came from Tommie Lehane with whom I had lunch with earlier in the day. His street images are superb so head over to Eyeblinks, his photoblog and have a browse.

i.e. what I'd go back over there in. I think I left my phone charger somewhere between Stirling and Fort William, I better go back over and spend 20 years looking for it.

New toys to play with over the bank holiday: An IR filter for the NEX. This was just a quick test shot but I think I'm going to enjoy it!

Statues of racehorses near the Spanish Arch earlier this week.
Race Week in Galway is in full swing. It has been a wet morning in Galway today so it remains to be seen what impact it will have on the crowds later this evening and tomorrow. It was Ladies Day yesterday and the helicopter shuttle from the racecourse to the Docks [and onwards to the Radisson Hotel nearby] was kept busy, but nothing like the frequency of a few years ago. I’ll post an update later today.
Update [July 31st]: When I strolled through Eyre Square at around 6pm on Thursday evening, it was quiet. By the time I returned, after dinner in Number 8, the square had been transformed into a sea of short skirts, fake tan and high heels [and that was just the lads]. If a freak shower had hit, the runoff from the tan alone would have rivalled the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico. There was also a prodigious amount of drinking, particularly by youngsters, though to be fair to them, they did make an effort to dress up for the occasion. This short video of Eyre Square shows the crowds milling about – spare a thought for the poor Gardaí on duty in the Square to keep order and also to confiscate glasses or bottles – they were certainly get less than thanks from anyone who had a bottle taken [the rule was plastic containers only].

3 Cute Chicks
We have a Swallow nest in our shed and I took this quick snap with the NEX (articulated LCD with liveview came in handy!). They're getting bigger even just in the last 2 weeks and can barely hide in the nest any more. I suspect they'll be flying in another 2 weeks.
And, in case you're wondering why I was disturbing them for a photograph: I disturb them anyway every time I walk into the shed and Mummy or Daddy inevitably swoops in, spots me at the last moment and turns around again. This has happened a few times and they haven't abandoned their offspring. I think they're smart enough to know that if they build their nest next to people, they have to accept the occasional human presence.
