McAWilliams: National Wax Museum

§ January 6th, 2010

National Wax Museum

Yesterday I was lucky enough to have been asked to bring my camera to work to take some pictures around town, but I also snapped up a few for myself too. I need to get my photo mojo back so bear me a while, but this pigeon really captured my eye, it looks like the little shit is planning on visiting the new National Wax Museum on Foster place.

Yes I know sometimes weird shite like that comes into my head, hmmmm

CillDaraMan: After the snow, Spenser Lock

§ January 6th, 2010

After the snow, Spenser Lock
The cold spell goes on and on, much to the delight of my kids who have at least two more days off school.
We had more snow this afternoon, thwe tailend of the storm (ha ha) that brought Dublin to a standstill and closed the airport, that's the rear edge of the shower heading south. The snow looks pretty on the frozen Grand Canal.

Peter Cox: Best Images of 2009

§ January 6th, 2010

With kudos to Jim Goldstein for the idea, here's a list of what I consider to be my top five images from 2009. 1 - The Dark Hedges, Co. Antrim
2 - Dún Briste, Co. Mayo
3 - Ballaghbeama Gap, Co, Kerry
4 - The Priest's Leap, Co. Cork
5 - Colliery Bay & Fair Head, Co. Antrim
2009 was a productive year, photographically. I'm hoping to get out more often in 2010 and produce a bit more volume. If I can find the time between workshops, that is! All the best in 2010 for your photographic endeavours. I'm jealous of those of you in Ireland with spectacular photographic conditions this month!

The Almond Croissant Diaries: Fluffy white stuff!

§ January 6th, 2010

006/365 First day of the conference. In addition to a number of thought-provoking talks, I also attended a Q&A session in the evening that was very interesting. Discussing the subject of “Sea level science and society - effective communication of our research”, pannelists included Antony Long (editor of Journal of Quaternary Science), Colin Murray-Wallace (editor of Quaternary Science Reviews) and Iain Stewart (presenter of BBC programmes such as Earth: The Climate Wars).

It gave me a lot to think about, including how I may be able to combine my research and my photography to communicate various issues - I’m still thinking so watch this space!

Heres a shot taken outside the building in which I was staying! All very pretty but rather awkward to battle through to get to (and from!) the lectures!

Will Knott: And the twelfth day of Christmas

§ January 6th, 2010

Traditionally today is the day to take down the Christmas decorations. The midwinter festival is over.

Half Holly Leaf on ice

I like what the frost did to the damaged holly leaf here. Its turned the tough leaf in to a frilly lacy thing.

Today is also Little Women’s Christmas, or Women’s Little Christmas. The two names seem to be interchangeable depending on where you are in Ireland. I do know that in Cork there will be a lot of “women only” parties throughout the city as the holly comes down.

Porchfield: Privacy

§ January 6th, 2010

This is the first in a short series of photographs which captures an Ireland that is reported to be disappearing. An Ireland when people believed what they were told by those “in charge”. Some say that it is nearly gone. Unfortunately this doesn’t seem to be the case. Judging by how lightly the perpetrators mentioned in recent reports, and those who shielded them, are getting off I fear we are still under the spell of an unholy alliance. Our lack of outrage continues to shame us.

Barry Somers: Frosty Sunrise

§ January 6th, 2010

I shoot this last weekend while out just before sunrise, normally when the sun is rising I'm driving to work so it made a refreshing change to take my time and just stop when I wanted.
