Dee Organ: Yeats Tower & Coole Park

§ November 10th, 2008

Above taken in Coole Park not far from Thoor Ballylee, home of William Butler Yeats, below. The tower had to be restored before Yeats could live there in 1919 with his wife and daughter. Yeats mentions Ballylee in a letter to Maud Gonne in May 1918

' We hope to be in Ballylee in a month and there I dream of making a house that may encourage people to avoid ugly manufactured things - an ideal poor man's house. Except a very few things imported as models we should get all made in Galway or Limerick. I am told that our neighbours are pleased that we are not getting 'grand things but old Irish furniture

After the Yeats family moved out in 1929 it fell into disuse , but was restored as 'Yeats Tower' in 1965 and fitted out as a Yeats museum.

The Almond Croissant Diaries: Bear with me a moment…

§ November 10th, 2008

…I have a few blog posts in the pipeline, including the second almond croissant review, but unfortunately real life has caught up with me! I have had a few stressful days worrying about my PhD. This is nothing strange, it happens to everyone who undertakes such a large project, its just darn frustrating. The stress will pass soon enough I’m sure.

However, in the meantime, I am finding it hard to justify spending time taking photos, and even harder to justify any post-processing! This means that todays photos are a few weeks old but they are quite exciting - to me anyway!

Both photos are colour accented, although the first one less obviously so. The first one was taken in an alleyway in Temple Bar. The second was a quick shot grabbed outside of Dublin Castle. I really like photos like this and have managed to be quite creative over the years. Most techniques that I use result from a combination of trial and error and google-ing for tips online. I also tend to devour photography mags for inspiration and pointers. But even though I should RTFM (as Daniel keeps telling me!) I often just have a stab at it on my own and come up with some interesting results. I have been asked a few times on flickr about some of the techniques I use and I decided that instead of replying each time with the step by step instructions I will write them here, as much for my own reference as for anyone else who may want to give them a go.

I am currently sketching the outline for the first of these posts and, hopefully, it will be up within the next few days, PhD stress permitting!

McAWilliams: Avatars and the choices YOU have to make

§ November 10th, 2008

Right so had a day off today and decided to download loads of updates to the canon software I have on my computer, one of which was a newer version of remote capture where I can use the computer to control the camera, and I decided to take some snapshots of myself for an avatar for twitter.

I have 4 images to choose from but all merit something so I would love if you guys through comments or on twitter can let me know which you prefer!

So here they are…

A powerboat down in Youghal almost lifts off the water as it bounces on waves.
