Iced Coffee: barcampcork profile shots

§ November 4th, 2008

In the spirit of the unconference (it is such a great word, and confuses everyone who hasn’t heard it before) I offered a free photo session at Barcamp Cork and, as mentioned at the time, I have chosen to upload these to an album on Pix.ie, the Irish photo-sharing website.

I ask that if you use any images you provide a link to my portfolio.

If you missed the session or are interested in having more photographs of yourself, colleagues or partners drop me an email at bookings [at] philokanephotography.com and I will be happy to chat to you.

The photographs from the short session are here.

Caution! Unprotected High Cliffs

A sign at the base of the short hill below the white pillar near Bantry in Co Cork warns of high cliffs. Unfortunately Adam was asleep in the car and I couldn’t venture any further so I’ll have to return some day to take photos of that pillar.

Latchiko: Hole Of Sorrows

§ November 4th, 2008

Halloween, an evening when the boundary between living and dead dissolves. What better way to spend the night than at one of Irelands most recognisable dolmens? This image of Poulnabrone (or Hole Of Sorrows in English) was captured late last Friday night. The exposure time was just shy of an hour and half during which time the Earths movement on its axis caused the stars to form trails. The star around which the other stars seem to rotate is the north star.

On a technical note, this image is a combination of 160 separate exposures. Leaving the shutter open for any length of time on a digital camera causes the sensor to overheat and introduces a lot of noise in the image (as well as potentially damaging the sensor).

Finally, boards.ie has published a book of photography by its members (including one of my images) and, if the preview is anything to go by, it looks like a great book for any coffee table. You can see the preview and buy the book here. Each purchase includes a charitable donation.

Grannymar: Diamonds are…

§ November 4th, 2008

Diamonds are forever, or so the song tells us.

Alas, my real ones were stolen a few years back

and now I have God’s diamonds:

The sun shone after a snow shower on 28th of October and I managed to capture the droplets as they clung to the plant.

Meanwhile at the back on the same day

We do get the sun in spots!

Well I decided to put up another image from the last photowalk I was on, this was the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk that took place a while ago. Why go back through my archives?

Well since doing this photowalk brought to my attention by Darren Greene, I have met a load of great photographers both here in Ireland but more so through Twitter. I put up a few of my images on a flickr group page and it opened up new doors to me. Firstly I got followed by @Napp_News which is the National Association of Photoshop Professionals, and then by a load of Napp Members, all except Scott Kelby himself!

These people have been a great source of knowledge to me in relation to my photography, but have also become very good friends since August! so tonight I decided to repay the favour and join up to Napp myself, and what a great deal they have for 99 Dollars you get a years membership with monthly magazines but the main thing for me is the website and the amount of valuable information available to members like tutorials, discounts etc, I can see myself being there for quite a long time trawling through everything.

If you want to join up click here and that will bring you through to the registration page, or if you want any information about the site just ask me on twitter.

inphotos.org: A Cabin in the Rockies

§ November 4th, 2008

A Cabin in the Rockies

A small wooden cabin or hut sits in a car park near the houses Automattic stayed in at Breckenridge in Colorado. The original shot can be seen in my Flickr stream or in the Automattic group there. This version has been extensively dodged and burned to bring out the contrast between light and dark.

Late posting of today’s photo because of the camera club tonight. It was model shoot night and I got a few shots but I’m not very comfortable directing so I’m undecided as to how well the photos came out.
