Glasseyalley: The Fishbox Ice Rink

§ August 19th, 2008

A discarded fish box on Annestown beach in Waterford, looking mysteriously like a badly maintained ice rink. Well.. it looks like that in my head anyway.

McAWilliams: Donna’s Rhino

§ August 19th, 2008

I received a phone call at 8.20 this morning saying a big package had arrived for me, I knew exactly what it was. Not a 5D from any of my blogging friends, not a new laptop from my twitter pals, this was something much more important to me.

A good while back I took a photograph of a rhino at Dublin Zoo. Not only has it got a lot of hits through google but because of it, an email arrived from Donna after leaving a comment on the post.

Donna’s initial comment left me a bit puzzled “Would it be possible to paint this picture, please could you reply via email”. I answered via email to find out what she meant. She left a second post explaining a bit more what she was planning, and I liked the idea. Basically the art class she was in would use it as a subject for their painting class. I sent Donna a full resolution version of the photograph to hopefully make their lives a bit easier.

We kept in touch with a few more mails over the past few months, finding out how people were getting along with my picture, I got a surprise when Donna sent me a photo of the oil painting she was doing, it looked amazing saying “This is my trial painting at half way stage . I am then going on to do it on a large scale. As a group we would like to thank you for your picture, the group are all going to paint in different mediums.”.

A trial painting!!! you gotta be kidding me it looked fantastic. She then told me that she would post me a finished version of the oil painting, I could not believe it. I promptly sent Donna my address awaiting the package, which arrived today and the picture you see above is what I had the greatest pleasure unwrapping.

Donna I can’t thank you enough for this painting, it will find a special place in the house to be hung up, and to everyone else at the Art Class in Chesterfield, you have no idea how proud you have made a very amateur photographer feel, by using one of my photos.

Thank you.

inphotos.org: Why does my Canon 20D keep clicking?

§ August 19th, 2008

fuelling the passion for camogie

Bord Gais, fuelling the passion for Camogie in Cork. Or is it the wine? I couldn’t resist taking this shot this evening!

This is the second last photo I took with my Canon 20D before the shutter started clicking continuously. The last one is a slightly blurry shot of my family and inlaws in the pictured Wine Bar on Washington Street, Cork. I had just taken the shot, decided it was time to put the camera away and get Adam out of the buggy. I put the lens cap on, and click, click, click, click..
The clicks would only stop when I took the battery out. It appears from this thread that I’m not alone. I know that in the old days, cameras would last decades and “they don’t make them like they used to”, but I never expected the Canon 20D to break down on me in just 3 years. At a guess, I’ve probably shot 75,000 pictures with it so perhaps it was about time the shutter complained.

Anyway, I’m going to ring Canon in Dublin tomorrow for a repair quote. If it’s too expensive I’ll have to look into getting a replacement camera. Hope the house insurance will pay out in that case.

Is it better to go on without someone you are sure you need. Or should you wait.

I’m at a crossroads with the Pink Portraits for October project, and a very strict deadline with a heap of organising to do. And no official word from the officials source other hand “wait and see”.

For this to work we need:

  • Photobloggers to group and work in teams, while spread out across the county
  • A complete model release form (literally yesterday)
  • Advance publicity about the photoblogging teams so that willing volunteers show up to be photographed
  • Those willing models, who will also commit to buy the photographs
  • Enough lead time to modify and print the photos

I’m sure I should be bothering HARO and a few of the PR guys for help.

Any tips on ways to get large groups of volunteers to show up?
Is an online model release form legally binding (a copy to read would be a good idea anyway)?
Would a facebook group (or 2 for each country) or myspace pages be a good idea?

Given that pinkforoctober.org exists, should I set up a site just for the portraits?

Of course doing any of these actions guarantees that any official support will just halt.

And all of this on our own. Or is it my own?

I’ll take all the advice I can get in the comments,
Will Knott

Figmentation: Croke Park

§ August 19th, 2008

We went to Croke Park last weekend to watch Cork play Kildare in the Gaelic Football quarter final. Croke Park is the home of GAA in Ireland. Kildare (the county where I live) lost, but it was still good to watch. This is a contingent of young Cork fans.
