Donal: The Flaws at Indie-Pendence in Mitchelstown

§ August 17th, 2008

The Flaws played on the Sunday evening of the recent Mitchelstown Music Festival.  They are a band I’ve liked for a while since buying their album “Achieving Vagueness”.  I know it’s unfair to keep making comparisons with other bands but they have a sound very similar to that of The Killers.  This is no bad thing and the album is well worth checking out if you are into this type of music.  It’s not ground-breaking but it’s well produced and instantly catchy.  I’d expect to hear a lot more from the band in the coming year.  Check out their MySpace for a few tracks.

McAWilliams: Powerscourt Damsel Fly

§ August 17th, 2008

While on holidays other then Wexford, we also decided to go for a trip down the road to Powerscourt Gardens, like Glendalough, Powerscourt is a place you cant tire of, the gardens are beautiful and the place is huge.

While in the Japanese part of the gardens I spotted a Damsel Fly sitting on the leave of a bamboo beside a little lake. I love the way these guys sit there with a big camera only an inch or 2 away and they are unfazed by it all.

Iced Coffee: rain through the window #1

§ August 17th, 2008

As I blogged about yesterday, there was a lot of rain, and consequently, widespread flooding in Northern Ireland yesterday.
This is a shot taken from the bus yesterday evening as I approached Belfast from Enniskillen.

I don’t normally post series of photos, though this is part one of what will be a 3 part series of photographs from this bus window. Incorporating the two themes of late; abstract and the rain.

Restaurant

A restaurant on St Patrick Street in Cork has this architectural feature over it’s door. You’re either going to love the lomo+vignette+colour effect or you’re going to hate it. This is an experiment with the newly enhanced GIMP Lomo plugin I had originally updated to work with GIMP 2.4. Elsamuko has added a few nice features.

In other news, the Guinness Storehouse photowalk was yesterday. I couldn’t make it but a number of bloggers did, including Will Knott, Darren and Alexa.
You can see some of the amazing shots from the day here, but that url may go stale in a week or so I guess. Well done to Marcus who had a huge hand in organising the trip.

Another Cork photowalk is out of the question in August unless someone else wants to organise one. I’m busy both weekends that are left this month. Perhaps in September? What about constraining it? Make it b/w only? Or portraits only, or architecture, or “secret” places in the city that people won’t recognise perhaps?

Pixie had a photowalk yesterday at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin.  A fantastic day was had by many so a huge thanks to Lisa Fitzsimons for looking after us so well and opening up the storehouse early so we could get some photos before the tourists amassed and of course another huge thanks to Marcus for the invite.

Photos and Ponderings: Stare

§ August 17th, 2008

I've tried insect macro photography before with little success. However, I found this perfect subject. It was big, so I could fill the frame with it, but most importantly, it stayed almost perfectly still for about ten minutes, allowing me to take loads of pictures and experiment with different settings and composition. I even bent grass less than an inch in front of it to get a better shot, and it didn't so much as flinch! I finally overstepped the line when I went off to get a penknife, and tried to chop off some blades of grass which were obscuring its face - it hopped off, almost lazily.
