Railway Tunnel

A tunnel under the railway line between Cork and Mallow that eventually ends up in “the big smoke”, Dublin (Only ever heard Dublin people refer to Dublin by that name..)

I believe the road heads to Whitechurch where we’re heading tomorrow for a meal with some Polish friends. There are great winding roads off the main Cork-Mallow dual carriageway. Lovely scenery and some unusual sights. Must rummage through some of those shots and dig out the good ones.

There’s even a Wikipedia entry for Big Smoke! Apparently several cities are known by that name: Belfast, London, Melbourne, Toronto and Vancouver. Interesting.

Iced Coffee: twelfth 2008

§ July 12th, 2008

If a group of people want to celebrate an achievement, by parading through the streets in costumes and playing music that’s fine, to a point, however, problems arise when these celebrations get out of hand, preventing normality for everyone else.

I have no problem with it all - heck I get a couple of days off work. I do however have a problem being intimidated as I attempt to keep from being prisoner in my own home; kids walking by with their trolleys filled with beer, police beside them, smiling. Then they call it “peaceful”. From my experience it isn’t very peaceful. And if the police could cut out the biggest factor which makes it so intolerable; the alcohol intake, the level of intimidation could be reduced, made much less of a problem in fact.

Maybe the “Orangefest” could become an event were people of all backgrounds don’t have to be kept indoors. More shops are opening. And bars, namely Madisons on Botanic Avenue, who state that they are “open as usual” - there could be others, though I’m not sure which.

It’s something. It’s a start. Soon the whole of Northern Ireland will no longer have to stand still on this one day of the year where everyone wants for something different.

Another shot from the old Southern Fruit warehouse.

I have no idea what this set of controls actually does, but more importantly; why is there a set of controls with a “slow” button in the gents toilet near the reception?

take care,

Iced Coffee: twelfth 2008

Traditional Twelfth of July march in Belfast.
More of my photographs from todays marches can be found on my flickr stream.

I wasn’t sure whether or not to post an image of the parades today, though when I got back and went through the images I got I knew I had to. The 12th July parades being such a part of Northern Ireland, its culture, many years of controversy and a constant reminder of its troubled past, I have posted this image as a way of portraying the way things are today.

View from the Ring of Brodgar, across the landscape. The sea level has risen over the centuries, but otherwise it's a reasonably unchanged vista. From the vantage point of the raised hillock beyond the circle (where it is postulated some ultimate or post-ritual ceremony took place) this is a dramatic and inspirational view. You can just see one of the ancient pathways worn through and around the site in the front of the photo.
